Since the late 1960’s chemical farming has been widely used across Tamil Nadu. Over time, these chemicals have depleted the soils’ microorganisms thus negatively effecting the quality and yield of crops. To regain soil health, CIRHEP has begun implementing organic and bio-dynamic practices into the techniques of local farmers. Organic and bio-dynamic agriculture replenish the soil through natural fertilizers and pesticides.
Objectives:
By using organic/bio-dynamic methods, farmers hope to reverse the damaging impact on natural resources that has resulted from chemical-based farming. Organic cultivation enriches soil fertility and helps the soil structure. A strong soil structure grows strong healthy crops.
Main Activities:
To replenish their soil, farmers are motivated to prepare and apply organic preparations such as cow horn manure, cow pat pit manure, vermicompost, etc. through training and demonstration. Organic/bio-dynamic farming is not solely concentrated on not using chemicals, there are principles that must also be followed Planting of trees, mixed cropping, crop rotation, composting, and cultivation of locally suitable crops using traditional seeds is also encouraged.
Impacts:
Since switching to organic farming, farmers have experience increased soil fertility, higher yields, and better quality of crops. These crops are sold for higher prices in the local markets thus increasing the farmers income. Since these farmers are no longer dependent on chemical inputs, they have more control over their crops and can use their income on other important needs. CIRHEP is currently working with 200 farmers in the surrounding area.
Below we will explain three types of preperations:
- Cowhorn Manure
- Cow Pat Pit
- Compost
